January 2004 Volume XIIVII, Number 1

Next Meeting: Monday, January 26, 2004, 7:30 PM. See below or the web site for the full year calendar.

Agenda: From Road Kill (the wooden kind) to Lathe, with a focus on "Saying I Love You From a Lathe" with Dennis Fuge.

If you have ever driven past a pile of wood that has a sign that says "Free Fire Wood" and you do not know what to do with it, you should come to this meeting.

Dennis will show how to identify certain common New Jersey trees in log form, how to cut the logs and  get them onto the lathe. The items he will show and demonstrate will cover some interesting items for "Saying I LoveYou From a Lathe".

Dennis has been turning for over 35 years and has lived on three continents. He is a highly creative turner who is well known for deep hollow vessels, hats and decorative platters. This is a must see demonstration for new turners who want to get started and also want to shower their partners with simple items turned from the lathe.

Summary of the November 2003 Meeting:

The club held its annual election of club officers and also reviewed the year?s activities.

New Officers: Dennis Fuge ? President. John Schneider ? Vice Pres. Jim Spalling ? Treasurer and Web master. Dan Donlon -- Secretary and Editor of Newsletter.

We expressed our thanks to Bruce Long for service as treasurer with a round of applause.

Mort Olin contacted Kean College about using their woodworking shop for our meetings. We will wait to learn what they have to offer.

This was followed by a Super Show and Tell, focusing on items made throughout the year. One item recommended was a pepper mill mechanism (the stainless steel type) made by Chef Specialties. It can be obtained from Packard or Lee Valley. This was followed by a Turnathon, where we had 5 lathes set up.

New Jersey Woodturners also demonstrated at The Woodworking Show on January 9, 10 and 11. Photos below.
